There are now more free ways to learn Lithuanian: the city hall portal, online courses, conversation clubs
GeneralGood news for everyone learning Lithuanian in Vilnius: there are now noticeably more free opportunities.
Aš kalbu — the municipality’s platform. Vilnius City Municipality has launched a unified platform, askalbu.lt: you choose a convenient school and teacher (more than 20 teachers from 15 city schools) and sign up for free classes. This is part of the city program “Drąsiai lietuviškai”.
Online courses A1–B1. The municipality also funds free online Lithuanian courses for foreigners (levels A1–B1, from the AMIF fund) — convenient for those who find it difficult to get to in-person classes.
Conversation practice. The Lithuanian Red Cross organizes free thematic conversation training sessions for migrants from non-EU countries (usually Sunday 12:00; the teacher does not speak Russian — comfortable from A2; registration in advance). And at the IOM Migration Information Center (MiCenter), conversation meetings with native-speaker volunteers are held: mini-groups by level, games, answers to questions about exams.
Why this matters now. From 1 January 2026, everyone who serves customers in Lithuania (sales assistants, waiters, tradespeople, drivers) will be required to do so in Lithuanian — the government has approved the basic A1 level, and after two years of residence the requirements will increase. The language is increasingly becoming a key to employment as well.
All four opportunities have already been added to our resources section — with links and participation details.
